Kids develop much faster when they devote their own time to practicing their skills.  You can encourage kids to practice on their own with a simple challenge booklet.  Players that complete the "Winter Challenge" or "Summer Challenge" are rewarded with a pool party or some other treat.

Suggestions:

 * make the children pay $1 of their own money for their copy of the booklet.  Doing so makes them buy in to the idea, and they are more likely to work at it.
 * have parents split the cost of the party
 * Print out a ready-made booklet at kinko's
